History:
During the 1950s and 1960s, De Havilland Canada (DHC) established itself as the world leader in the design and production of Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft. Models such as the DHC-3 Otter, DHC-4 Caribou, DHC-5 Buffalo, and DHC-6 Twin Otter earned a reputation for reliability and versatility, enabling operations in remote locations with little or no runway infrastructure.
As commercial aviation expanded rapidly, demand grew for an aircraft capable of serving short routes from compact airfields and smaller regional airports, helping to ease congestion at major domestic and international hubs. In response, DHC developed the Dash 7.
The prototype was unveiled on February 5, 1975, fifty years ago, and completed its maiden flight on March 27 of the same year. Designed to accommodate 50 passengers, the four-engine Dash 7 could operate from runways or unprepared strips measuring less than 700 metres (2,000 feet) in length.
Beyond its widespread use with commuter airlines across North America, the Dash 7 found success with operators around the world serving challenging destinations in arctic, mountainous, and tropical regions where larger jet aircraft could not operate efficiently. Military interest, however, was comparatively limited, resulting in only a small number of military customers.
Among those customers were the Canadian Armed Forces, which operated two Dash 7 aircraft designated CC-132 between 1979 and 1987. Assigned to 412 Transport Squadron at Canadian Forces Base Lahr in Germany's Black Forest region, these aircraft transported senior officials, military personnel, and cargo throughout Europe.
