The "Miracle on the Hudson" – January 15, 2009
While climbing after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport, Flight 1549 struck a flock of Canada geese, causing both engines to fail. Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles executed a controlled water landing in the Hudson River, ensuring the survival of all 155 occupants. Key points:
Ditching: The aircraft landed in the river at approximately 130 knots (150 mph), slightly nose-up
Evacuation: Passengers used over wing exits and inflatable slides as rafts; minimal injuries reported (five serious injuries, 95 minor)
Post-incident: The aircraft was pulled from the Hudson, investigated by the NTSB, and later moved to a museum for preservation
